Why Extraction Method Changes Everything
Mushroom powder and mushroom extract are not interchangeable. The difference between a dual-extracted fruiting body and a mycelium grain product is an order of magnitude in potency, and almost no brands will tell you why.
Pick up almost any mushroom supplement and read the label. You'll see "mushroom powder," "mycelium," or "full spectrum extract." These terms sound substantive. Most of them are meaningless without context, and some are deliberately misleading.
The problem with mycelium grain
Mushrooms grow through a medium, typically brown rice, oats, or sawdust. When manufacturers grow mycelium on grain and then grind it up, they're selling you a mixture that is mostly grain starch with some mycelium interspersed. Independent testing by the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia has found beta-glucan concentrations in mycelium-on-grain products as low as 1–2%, compared to 25–40% in properly extracted fruiting body products.
Beta-glucans are the primary immunologically active polysaccharides in functional mushrooms. They are what decades of clinical research on Lentinan, PSK, and beta-D-glucan are actually studying. If your product has 2% beta-glucan content, the dose is essentially irrelevant.
Hot water extraction: capturing the water-soluble actives
The cell walls of mushrooms are made of chitin, the same polymer in insect exoskeletons. Chitin is indigestible by humans. To access the bioactive compounds locked inside, you need hot water extraction at temperatures sufficient to break down the cell wall matrix and liberate the polysaccharides.
This is why raw mushroom powder (even from a real fruiting body) is significantly less bioavailable than a hot water extract. You're eating the cell wall, not the medicine inside it.
Alcohol extraction: capturing the fat-soluble actives
Several of the most important functional compounds in mushrooms are fat-soluble, not water-soluble: triterpenes in Reishi and erinacines in Lion's Mane. Hot water does not extract them. You need an alcohol step.
A dual extract performs both: a hot water extraction step followed by an alcohol extraction step, then the two are combined. This is the only method that preserves both the water-soluble beta-glucans and polysaccharides AND the fat-soluble triterpenes and terpenoids.
What to look for:
1. "Fruiting body only": not mycelium on grain 2. "Dual extracted" or "dual extraction": not just "extract" 3. Beta-glucan percentage stated, ideally 25%+ 4. Third-party tested: an independent lab should verify the beta-glucan content
At Seta Souls, every product (Melena de León, Reishi, Cordyceps, Shiitake) states the beta-glucan concentration and is verified by independent lab testing. This is non-negotiable.
