The Research

01

A prescription drug came from this mushroom

Lentinan, extracted from Shiitake, is the only mushroom-derived compound registered as a prescription treatment. It has been used alongside chemotherapy in Japan since 1985. It does not kill cancer cells. It trains your immune system to recognise and destroy them.

02

Lower LDL through a different door

Eritadenine inhibits the enzyme that loads cholesterol into LDL particles. In studies, this reduced LDL by 20 to 25%. The mechanism is entirely different from statins, which means it can work where statins do not, and alongside them where they do.

03

The most clinically tested mushroom compound

AHCC, derived from Shiitake mycelium, has completed over 30 human clinical trials. More than any other mushroom compound. Studies cover immune function, viral clearance, post-surgical recovery, and cancer adjunct therapy. Most mushroom research is still in animals. This one is not.

04

It chooses which bacteria to feed

Shiitake's polysaccharides selectively feed Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, the bacterial families most associated with immune regulation and gut health, while inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. It is not a broad prebiotic. It is a targeted one.

05

All eight essential amino acids

Shiitake contains every essential amino acid your body cannot produce itself, with an unusually high concentration of leucine, the amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis. Its nutritional completeness is comparable to egg white.

06

Two independent mechanisms for heart health

Eritadenine lowers LDL through enzyme inhibition. Shiitake's beta-glucans address arterial inflammation through a separate pathway: they bind to receptors on macrophages in arterial walls and reduce foam cell formation, a key step in atherosclerosis. Two distinct mechanisms. One mushroom.

07

It outperforms some antiseptics against oral bacteria

In vitro studies show Shiitake extract inhibits Streptococcus mutans, the primary driver of tooth decay, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, the main pathogen in gum disease, more effectively than some standard oral antiseptics. Unlike most antibacterial agents, it does so without disrupting beneficial oral bacteria.

08

The only edible mushroom that generates Vitamin D

Shiitake contains ergosterol, a compound that converts to Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) under UV light exposure. Sun-dried Shiitake can reach concentrations comparable to therapeutic supplement doses. A 2011 study found that consuming sun-exposed Shiitake was as effective as Vitamin D2 supplements at raising serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Most whole foods contain negligible Vitamin D. Shiitake is the exception.
